Keep the spicy Italian sausage drippings. Don't throw the grease out after cooking the Italian sausage; it adds a lot of rich flavor. Keep the sausage fairly chunky for the best texture. Use julienne cuts for the vegetables and chiffonade for the basil. Choose a good quality white wine, preferably something that pairs well with the meal.
